Billowy effectually the Paul Ricard circuit, Lando Norris says the return of porpoising may non be a bad thing for McLaren every bit it could mean they have unlocked actress downforce.

McLaren are ane of the teams that have had minimal porpoising in the offset half of this season.

However, it was notable the upgraded MCL36 was bouncing at the Paul Ricard excursion during Friday's practise sessions.

McLaren had by far the near updates for their car, the team's French Grand Prix package featuring revised sidepods, engine cover, floor, rear wing and rear brake ducts.

Norris was sixth fastest in FP2 while his squad-mate Daniel Ricciardo also bankrupt into the acme 10, the Australian 9th fastest.

As such, Norris says maybe the porpoising is a good sign for McLaren.

"The terminal few races nosotros've had quite a bit at times," he said. "Silverstone we had a lot as well. Not a surprise, not a shock.

"I'one thousand hoping…it's kind of a good thing. If nosotros tin can improve the motorcar, sometimes that promotes porpoising.

"Autonomously from Red Bull, it seems like it's something Ferrari and Mercedes have had a lot of and they are evidently a lot quicker than the states.

"So maybe Cherry Bull nailed it with all of their stuff, only I think every bit we are trying to improve the machine sometimes nosotros expose this phenomenon and it's maybe not a bad affair sometimes.

"Sometimes it means you are heading in the correct direction so we are trying to sympathize information technology and hopefully we can find it's a good thing, not a bad one."

Every bit for his thoughts on the updates, Norris says he still needs time to adapt every bit he just ran them in the second session, using the old parcel in opening practise.

"I wouldn't say tricky," he said. "It'southward only this slight feeling you go behind the wheel. Y'all are and then sensitive to…you go so used to things.

"As soon as something feels just a little bit off, you have to figure out why that's happening, what it's doing, what the reasoning is for information technology and and then how to overcome it and maximise information technology once again.

"So information technology's nothing similar, say, good or bad. It'due south just the limitation of the machine is in different places through the corner and therefore you just take to adapt yourself to that.

"Then I guess I'm playing a fiddling chip of grab-up and just trying to empathize all of that, comparison to Daniel, only at the same time it'southward been skilful considering we've been able to compare data easily considering nosotros chose that strategy of me not having it, him having it, and therefore we tin can expect at the data tonight and extract more performance for tomorrow."
